Blockout Curtains Brisbane, Made in Our Underwood Workroom

Darker bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms with custom blockout

Blockout curtains turn a bright Brisbane bedroom into a room you can actually sleep in. They shut out early sunrises, street lights and harsh afternoon sun, and help a media room or nursery stay dark when you need it. EziLux makes custom blockout curtains to fit your windows and doors, cutting and sewing every set in our Underwood workroom and installing across Brisbane and South East Queensland. Typical lead time is 2–3 weeks from order, with a 3-year warranty. Start with a free in-home measure and quote.

Why blockout curtains suit Brisbane homes

Charcoal blockout S-fold curtains closed across a bedroom window - Southport

Queensland doesn't do daylight saving, so in summer the sun can be up well before 5am and straight into an east-facing bedroom. By mid-afternoon it's the west side's turn, with low, hot sun on the glass and glare across the TV. Blockout curtains (some people call them blackout curtains) give you a simple way to take back control: close them and the room goes dark, calm and noticeably less glary.

Early sunrises and west sun

East-facing bedrooms catch the first light of the day, and west-facing rooms take the brunt of the afternoon sun. A blockout curtain drawn across the glass stops that direct light reaching the bed, the couch or the floor, and helps the room feel less harsh during the hottest part of the day.

Street lights, headlights and neighbours

Front bedrooms on busy streets, townhouses close to the neighbours and homes near street lights rarely get truly dark at night. Blockout curtains block that light and give you full night-time privacy with the lights on inside, something a sheer can't do on its own.

Shift workers and day sleepers

Nurses, tradies, hospital and airport staff, and anyone on early or night shifts need a bedroom that's dark in the middle of the day. We plan blockout curtains for day sleepers to cut light leaks around the edges as well as through the fabric, so the room stays as dark as possible at noon.

Nurseries and kids' rooms

Little ones often sleep better in a darker room, especially for daytime naps and those long summer evenings when it's still light at bedtime. Blockout curtains help settle a nursery, and a cord-free option keeps the window area tidier and safer (see the nursery FAQ below).

Media rooms and home theatres

Glare on a TV or projector screen ruins a movie. Blockout curtains in a media room cut daylight so the picture looks the way it should, and a deep, soft fabric also helps the room feel more like a cinema.

Heat and glare on hard Brisbane sun

When they're closed, blockout curtains help take the edge off heat coming through sunny glass and protect floors and furniture from direct sun. We're honest about what to expect, though: a curtain helps, but it isn't a replacement for insulation, tinting or air-conditioning. More on that in the FAQs.

Blockout, dim-out or lined: what's the difference?

"Blockout" covers a few different ways of making a curtain dark. At your measure we'll show you the options side by side and help you choose based on how dark the room needs to be and how you want the curtain to look.

Blockout fabric

Blockout fabric is made to stop light passing through it. Hold it up to the sun and you shouldn't see light through the weave. It's the choice for bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms and day sleepers.

Dim-out (room-darkening) fabric

Some retailers sell "dim-out" or "room-darkening" fabrics that only reduce light. For bedrooms and media rooms we recommend a true blockout.

Why the fabric isn't the whole story

Even the best blockout fabric lets light in if it creeps around the top, sides or middle of the curtain. How dark the room gets also depends on where the track sits, how far it runs past the window, how much the curtains overlap in the centre and how close they hang to the floor. We plan all of that at the measure, which is the real difference between a custom blockout and a ready-made panel.

Headings for blockout curtains

Blockout curtains can be made with an S-fold, pinch pleat or box pleat heading. Because blockout fabric is heavier than a sheer, we factor in its weight and the stack-back space when we recommend one.

Blockout with sheers: double curtains

If you want the room dark at night but still private and bright during the day, add a sheer on a second track alongside the blockout.

How double curtains (sheer + blockout) work

Motorised blockout curtains

Heavy blockout across wide glass or a high window is easier to close every night with a Novo N21 curtain motor, operated by remote or a light pull.

Which rooms need blockout curtains?

Room or window Does blockout suit it? What we usually recommend
Main bedroom Yes, a favourite Blockout for sleep; add a sheer in front if you want soft daytime privacy
Nursery and kids' rooms Yes Blockout on a ceiling-fixed track that runs past the window, with a cord-free wand or a motor
Shift worker / day-sleeper bedroom Yes Blockout with extra overlap and track run-past to reduce edge light; consider pairing with shutters
Media room or home theatre Yes Blockout, often in a deeper colour, to cut screen glare
Street-facing front bedroom Yes Blockout for night-time privacy and street light; sheer in front for daytime
West-facing living room Often Double curtains: sheer for daytime, blockout to close in the hottest part of the afternoon
Guest room Optional Blockout depending on how dark you want it
Living room with a view, used mainly by day Not usually on its own Sheer curtains, with blockout only if you need evening privacy

When sheers alone aren't enough

Sheers are lovely for soft daylight, but they won't darken a room, they're see-through at night with the lights on, and they won't do much against hot western sun. If a room needs to be dark for sleep or screens, private after dark, or more comfortable on summer afternoons, it needs a blockout layer, either on its own or behind a sheer as double curtains. For daylight-only rooms, see our sheer curtains. Weighing up curtains against plantation shutters? Read shutters or curtains: how to decide.

What affects the price of blockout curtains?

A blockout quote depends on how much light you need to stop as well as the size of the window. Your free measure gives you the exact figure. These are the main factors:

  • Light control: running the track past the window each side and taking the curtain close to the floor uses more track and fabric
  • Blockout fabric: the blockout range and colour you choose
  • Heading: S-fold, pinch pleat or box pleat, which use different amounts of heavier fabric
  • Blockout only, or blockout plus sheer: a double track adds a second curtain and track
  • Track fixing: ceiling-fixed or wall-fixed, curved or bay windows
  • Manual or motorised: wand, or a Novo N21 motor
  • Number of windows: one bedroom or the whole home
  • Installation: ceiling height, access and any special fixing

Example blockout projects

  • Main bedroom window: one window about 1.8 m wide, blockout pinch pleat on a ceiling-fixed track, manual wand.
  • Nursery: one window about 1.2 m wide, blockout S-fold on a ceiling-fixed track that runs past the window each side, cord-free wand.
  • Media room: one opening about 3 m wide, deep-colour blockout S-fold, manual or motorised.
  • West-facing bedroom, day and night: one sliding door about 2.4 m wide, sheer plus blockout on two tracks, S-fold heading, blockout motorised with a Novo N21.

How we measure, make and fit blockout curtains

1. A measure that hunts for light gaps

At your free in-home measure we look for every place light could creep in: over the top, around the sides and through the centre. We check where the track can sit, how far it can run past the window each side and how close the curtain can hang to the floor.

2. Fabric, lining and overlap planned for darkness

We confirm the blockout fabric, the centre overlap and the drop before your curtains are cut and sewn in our Underwood workroom. Expect a typical lead time of 2–3 weeks from order; we confirm your date when you order.

3. Installed and dressed

Our team fits the tracks, hangs your curtains and dresses them so the folds fall evenly, the centre overlaps neatly and the curtains stack back tidily. Then we show you how everything works, including any motorised curtains.

4. Warranty and local support

Blockout curtains from EziLux come with a 3-year warranty, and our team is based in Underwood.

Blockout curtain FAQs

Is there a difference between blockout and blackout curtains?

No, they're the same thing. "Blockout" is the usual term in Australia, while "blackout" is more common in the US and UK. Both describe curtains made to stop light coming through the fabric. Whichever word you search for, you'll find the same product here, custom-made in our Underwood workroom.

Do blockout curtains block 100% of light?

A good blockout fabric stops light coming through the fabric itself, but no curtain on its own makes a room pitch black. Light can still sneak in around the top, the sides, the centre where the curtains meet and underneath. We reduce those gaps by fixing the track to the ceiling where we can, running it past the window on each side, adding overlap in the centre and setting the drop close to the floor. For the darkest result, some clients pair blockout curtains with shutters.

Will blockout curtains stop the heat from a west-facing window?

They'll help, but they won't stop it all. Closed blockout curtains reduce the direct sun and glare coming through the glass, and many Brisbane clients notice a west-facing room feels more comfortable in the afternoon with them drawn. The heat still reaches the glass, though, so curtains work best alongside other measures like eaves, tinting, insulation or air-conditioning. The habit that helps most is simply closing them before the afternoon sun hits.

Are blockout curtains safe and dark enough for a nursery?

They're one of the most popular choices for nurseries. For darkness, we suggest a ceiling-fixed track that runs past the window, with generous overlap in the centre. For safety, we recommend a wand or a motor rather than loose cords, and we keep the window area tidy and out of reach. Talk to us at your measure about where the cot will sit so we can plan the curtain around it.

What's the best blockout setup for a media room?

For a media room, the aim is to stop daylight and reflections on the screen. A blockout curtain on a ceiling-fixed track that covers the whole wall of glass, with no gaps at the sides, works best. Deeper colours also stop the curtain itself reflecting light back onto the screen. S-fold suits wide walls of glass, and a Novo N21 motor lets you close the room from your seat.

Can I choose any fabric and still have it blockout?

Our blockout curtains are made from dedicated blockout fabrics, which come in a range of colours and textures. We'll show you the options at your measure or in our Underwood showroom so you can find one that suits your room.

Can blockout curtains be washed?

It depends on the fabric. Many blockout fabrics have a coating or special weave that can be damaged by machine washing or a hot dryer, so always follow the care label for your curtain. For everyday care, a light vacuum with a soft brush attachment and airing on a breezy day keeps dust down, and you can spot-clean marks gently.

Should I choose blockout curtains or plantation shutters for a bedroom?

Both can darken a bedroom, and they suit different people. Blockout curtains give a soft, quiet look, close fully across the glass and can be motorised. Plantation shutters let you tilt the louvres for light, airflow and privacy through the day, and close for darker nights. Many Brisbane bedrooms use both, with blockout curtains over shutters for the darkest result. EziLux makes curtains and shutters in Underwood, so we can help you compare. Read shutters or curtains: how to decide, or see our plantation shutters Brisbane.

Will blockout curtains make my room feel dark and heavy during the day?

Only when they're closed. When open, blockout curtains stack neatly to the side of the window, and a ceiling-fixed track that runs past the frame lets them clear the glass so you keep your daylight. Lighter blockout colours also look softer in a room. If you'd like soft light and privacy during the day without opening the room right up, add a sheer in front with double curtains.

How do I know if I need blockout or just a sheer?

Ask how you use the room. If you need it dark for sleep, naps, shift work or screens, or private after dark with the lights on, you need blockout. If you mainly want to soften daylight and stop people seeing in during the day, a sheer is usually enough. Many bedrooms and street-facing rooms need both, which is where double curtains come in. We'll help you decide room by room at your free measure. See our sheer curtains for daytime-only rooms.
