Why sheer curtains suit Brisbane light

Floor-to-ceiling white sheer curtains in a bright living room overlooking a sunlit garden - Gold Coast

Brisbane gets strong, direct sun for much of the year. Morning light pours into east-facing bedrooms, afternoon sun hits west-facing glass, and the glare bounces off tiles, timber floors and TV screens. Sheer curtains take the edge off that light without shutting it out. The room stays bright, but the light turns soft and even.

Daytime privacy without losing the view

During the day, a sheer makes it hard for people outside to see in, while you can still see out to the garden, the street or the water. It’s the simplest way to feel less on show in a front living room or a home close to the neighbours, without living behind closed blinds.

Made for open-plan living and tall glass

Many Brisbane homes, especially newer builds and renovations, have open-plan living areas, big stacking or sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling windows. Ready-made sheers rarely fit those widths and drops. We make each sheer to the opening, so it runs from ceiling to floor, covers the glass edge to edge and stacks back neatly when you want the doors open.

Light and airy for subtropical homes

Sheers are light and breezy, which suits Queensland living. They move with the breeze when windows and doors are open and soften a room without making it feel heavy in summer. For west-facing rooms that heat up in the afternoon, we often suggest a blockout layer behind the sheer (see double curtains below).

Sheer fabrics and looks

Not all sheers look or behave the same. The weave, weight and colour change how much light comes through, how much privacy you get, and how the curtain drapes. We’ll show you options at your measure or in the showroom so you can see them in your own light.

Linen-look sheers

Linen-look sheers have the relaxed, natural texture of linen, a popular choice for coastal, Hamptons and modern Australian interiors. They give a soft, lived-in look while letting plenty of light through.

Soft white and neutral sheers

White, ivory and soft neutral sheers are the classic choice. They brighten a room, sit quietly against most wall colours and work with any heading. A white sheer also looks clean and consistent from the street.

Textured and denser weaves

Sheers with a slub, open-weave or textured finish add interest up close and catch the light beautifully. A slightly tighter or textured weave also gives a little more daytime privacy than a very fine voile.

Headings for sheer curtains

Sheers can be made with an S-fold, pinch pleat or box pleat heading, and S-fold is the most popular choice on wide glass and sliding doors. We’ll suggest the heading that suits your fabric and stack-back space at the measure.

Sheers with blockout: double curtains

A sheer gives daytime privacy, but at night people outside can see shapes through it once the lights are on. If a room needs night-time privacy or darkness too, pair the sheer with a blockout on a second track.

How double curtains (sheer + blockout) work

Motorised sheer curtains

Long sheers across voids, high windows or wide sliding doors can be fitted with a Novo N21 curtain motor, so fine fabric glides open without being tugged by hand.

Which rooms suit sheer curtains?

Room or window Does a sheer suit it? What we usually recommend
Living and family rooms Yes, a favourite Floor-to-ceiling sheer, often S-fold, to soften glare and keep the view
Dining rooms Yes Sheer in S-fold, or pinch pleat for a more formal room
Sliding and stacking doors Yes S-fold sheer on a ceiling-fixed track that stacks clear of the door you use most; motorise very wide spans
Street-facing front windows Yes, for daytime Sheer for daytime privacy; add blockout if you use the room at night
Tall glass, voids and high windows Yes Ceiling-to-floor sheer, often with a Novo N21 motor
Main bedrooms Not on its own Double curtains: sheer for daytime, blockout for sleep
Kids’ rooms, nurseries, media rooms Not on its own Blockout, with a sheer in front only if you want daytime softness
Rooms with plantation shutters As a layer Sheer curtains over shutters for softness; the shutters handle light and privacy

When not to use sheers alone

Choose more than a sheer if you need darkness for sleep or screens, privacy at night with lights on, or stronger protection from hot afternoon sun. In those rooms, pair the sheer with a blockout layer as double curtains, or consider plantation shutters. Not sure? Read shutters or curtains: how to decide.

What affects the price of sheer curtains?

With sheers, most of the cost sits in how much fabric the opening needs and which sheer you choose. Your free measure turns that into an exact quote. The main factors are:

  • Sheer fabric: fine voile, linen-look, textured or coloured sheer, and the range you choose
  • Fullness: sheers need more fullness than heavier fabrics to look right, so wide openings use more cloth
  • Ceiling-to-floor drops: sheers often run from the ceiling to the floor, which means longer drops than a window-sized curtain
  • Heading: S-fold, pinch pleat or box pleat
  • Sheer only, or sheer plus blockout: a second layer adds another curtain and track
  • Manual or motorised: wand or cord, or a Novo N21 motor
  • Number of windows: one room or the whole home
  • Installation: ceiling height, access and any special fixing

Example sheer projects

  • Sliding door sheer: one sliding door about 2.4 m wide, sheer S-fold on a ceiling-fixed track, manual wand.
  • Front living room window: one street-facing window about 2 m wide, linen-look sheer, pinch pleat heading.
  • Open-plan living wall: a run of floor-to-ceiling glass, box pleat sheer on a ceiling-fixed track.
  • Street-facing bedroom: one window about 1.8 m wide, coloured sheer, S-fold heading.

How we measure, make and fit your sheers

1. A measure that looks at your light

At your free in-home measure we look at which way each window faces, how much glare it gets and how visible the room is from the street or neighbours. Then we measure the opening and the stack-back space beside it, so the sheer can clear the glass when it’s open.

2. Fabric and fullness chosen for privacy

Sheers need generous fullness to look right in bright light, so we set it for the fabric, heading and width before your curtains are cut and sewn in Underwood. Lead time is typically 2–3 weeks from order, and we confirm the date when you order.

3. Installed and dressed

Our team fits the tracks, hangs your sheers and dresses them so the folds fall evenly and the curtains stack neatly, then shows you how everything works, including any motorised curtains.

4. Covered by our warranty

Every EziLux curtain carries a 3-year warranty, backed by our local Underwood team.

Sheer curtain FAQs

Can people see through sheer curtains at night?

Yes, usually. During the day, the outside is brighter than your room, so a sheer makes it hard for people to see in. At night, with the lights on inside, that flips, and people outside can often see shapes and movement through the fabric. Denser or textured sheers help a little, but for real night-time privacy, add a blockout curtain on a second track. That’s what our double curtains do.

Will sheer curtains help with west-facing heat?

Sheers help with glare and soften harsh afternoon light, and they take some of the sting out of direct sun on floors and furniture. They’re light, open fabrics, though, so they won’t block heat the way a lined blockout will. For hot west-facing rooms in Brisbane, many clients keep a sheer for daytime and add a blockout behind it to close during the hottest part of the afternoon.

Should I choose linen or a synthetic linen-look sheer?

Both give that soft, natural texture. Natural linen has a beautifully relaxed look but tends to crease and can move slightly with humidity, which is worth knowing in Queensland. Linen-look sheers made from synthetic yarns usually hold their shape and hang more evenly, and are generally easier to care for. We’ll show you options side by side at the measure so you can choose the look and feel you prefer.

How much fullness do sheer curtains need?

Sheers need more fullness than heavier fabrics to look right. Too little fabric and a sheer looks flat and thin when closed, especially in bright light. We set the fullness for each curtain based on the fabric, the heading and the width of the opening, so the folds look generous and even.

How do I clean and care for sheer curtains?

Most sheers only need a light vacuum with a soft brush attachment every so often, and airing on a breezy day. For a deeper clean, follow the care instructions for your fabric, as some sheers can be gently washed and others need professional cleaning. Avoid rough handling of fine fabrics, and let the curtain hang to dry so it keeps its shape.

Are sheers better on a track or a curtain rod?

For most Brisbane homes we recommend a track, especially for wide glass, sliding doors and ceiling-to-floor sheers. A ceiling-fixed track lets the sheer start right at the ceiling, glides smoothly on long runs and is needed for an S-fold heading or a motor. We fit tracks on all our curtains, which give the neatest result.

Where do sheers go when a sliding door is open?

Sheers stack back to one or both sides of the opening, so plan where you want the fabric to sit when the door is open. We usually stack sheers on the fixed-glass side so the door you walk through stays clear, and we extend the track past the frame where there’s room so the stack covers the wall rather than the glass. We’ll check the stack-back space at your free measure.

Should I choose sheer curtains or shutters for a street-facing window?

It depends on how you use the room. Sheers give soft daytime privacy and a light, airy look, but they’re see-through at night unless you add a blockout. Plantation shutters let you angle the louvres for privacy, light and airflow at any time of day. Many homes use both, with sheers over shutters for softness. EziLux makes curtains and shutters in Underwood, so we can help you compare. Read shutters or curtains: how to decide.

Can I add a blockout behind my sheers later?

Often, yes, if there’s room above or in front of the window for a second track. The neatest result comes from planning both tracks at the start, even if you only buy the sheer now, so the brackets and spacing suit a second layer later. If you think you might want blockout in a bedroom or west-facing room down the track, tell us at your measure.

What colour sheer gives the most daytime privacy?

Privacy depends more on the weave than the colour. A tighter or textured weave is harder to see through than a fine, open voile. Lighter colours keep a room bright and look clean from the street. We’ll hold samples up to your window at the measure so you can compare.
