Brisbane light is bright and direct for much of the year. West-facing glass heats up through the afternoon, sliding doors catch glare on screens and floors, and many newer homes have tall windows and big stacking doors that ready-made curtains simply don’t fit. A curtain cut to the opening solves that properly.
Because we make each set to measure, we can choose the right fabric for each job: a sheer to soften glare and give daytime privacy from the street, a blockout to darken a bedroom and help keep summer heat off the glass, or both on a double track. We set the drop, fullness and heading at the in-home measure so the curtains clear the floor neatly, cover the glass edge to edge and stack back without blocking the door you use every day.
Custom sizing also matters on high ceilings and voids. A ceiling-fixed track that runs floor to ceiling makes a room feel taller and stops light leaking over the top, something off-the-shelf widths rarely manage.
Sheer curtains filter harsh light and spread soft daylight through living and dining areas without closing the room in. From the street, a sheer gives you daytime privacy while you still see out to the garden or the view. That makes it a popular choice for open-plan living rooms, front windows and large glass walls.
On wide openings and sliding doors, most Brisbane clients choose an S-fold (wave) heading for an even, continuous ripple from ceiling to floor. If you prefer a more tailored look, sheers also suit pinch pleat and box pleat headings.
Keep in mind that sheers are for daytime. At night, with the lights on inside, they give much less privacy, which is why many homes add a blockout layer behind.

Blockout curtains are made to darken a room. They suit bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms and street-facing windows where you want privacy and real darkness, including early Queensland sunrises and streetlights. A lined, dense fabric also adds a layer between you and the glass, which helps soften sound and keeps summer heat out of the room.
To get the darkest result, the details count as much as the fabric: a ceiling-fixed or wall-fixed track that extends past the frame, enough width to overlap the edges, and a drop that sits close to the floor. We work all of that out at the measure.
Blockout works with S-fold, pinch pleat or box pleat headings. If you also want daylight and privacy during the day, pair the blockout with a sheer on a second track.
The heading is the stitched top of the curtain. It decides how the fabric folds, how it hangs and how much room it needs when open. We’ll help you match it to your ceiling height, the stack-back space beside the window and the style of the room.
Soft, even waves that run continuously from ceiling to floor. S-fold suits wide glass, sliding doors and modern or coastal rooms, and it works well with both sheers and blockout. It’s also the heading most often paired with a motor on long runs. Learn more about S-fold curtains.
Grouped pleats stitched at the top for a tailored, structured fold. Pinch pleat suits traditional and transitional interiors, and rooms where you want classic fullness and a formal line.
Flat, squared pleats along the heading for a crisp, contemporary profile and a neat, uniform stack. A good choice for modern rooms that want a little more structure than S-fold.

Once you order, your curtains are cut and sewn to your measurements in our Underwood workroom. Typical lead time is 2–3 weeks from order, depending on fabric and workload, and we confirm your estimate when you order.

The cost of custom curtains depends mainly on the size of the opening, the fabric, the heading and whether you choose one or two layers. Track type, motorisation, ceiling height and the number of windows also affect the price. A single sheer S-fold on a sliding door costs much less than a motorised double curtain across a void. Sheer, dim-out and blockout curtains differ in how much light they let through. Sheers are light and translucent, softening glare and giving daytime privacy while keeping the room bright. Blockout fabrics are dense and lined to darken a room for sleep, screens and night-time privacy. Dim-out (or light-filtering) fabrics sit in between. They reduce light noticeably without fully darkening the room. Most Brisbane homes choose sheer, blockout or both. Ask us during your measure which fabrics suit each room.
Neither is better overall. It depends on the look you want and the window. S-fold (wave) gives soft, even folds that suit wide glass, sliding doors and modern or coastal interiors, and it’s the usual choice for motorised runs. Pinch pleat gives a tailored, structured fold that suits classic and transitional homes. Box pleat sits between the two. At the measure, we’ll show you how each heading would sit in your space and how much stack-back room it needs.
You need a double track if you want a sheer and a blockout that open and close separately. The double track holds two layers side by side, so you can draw the sheer during the day and close the blockout at night. If you only need one function, such as daytime privacy in a living room or darkness in a kids’ room, one curtain on a single track is enough. We’ll check that there’s room above the window for two tracks.
Yes, we motorise curtains with the Novo N21 curtain motor, which is ideal for wide glass, voids and high windows. The easiest and neatest way is to plan motorisation from the start, so the track, heading and fabric are specified to suit the motor. Whether a motor can be added to an existing curtain later depends on the track already installed. Tell us at the measure if you might motorise in future and we’ll plan for it.
Custom curtains typically take 2–3 weeks from order. That includes cutting and sewing in our Underwood workroom before installation. The exact time depends on the fabric you choose and how busy the workroom is, and we confirm your estimate when you order. If you need curtains up by a certain date, such as before Christmas or a move-in, let us know when you book your free measure.

Yes, curtains can help, especially lined blockout curtains closed during the hottest part of the day. They put a layer between the room and sun-heated glass, which reduces glare and the heat coming into the room. They work best on west- and north-facing windows, with a track that extends past the frame and a drop close to the floor. Sheers mainly reduce glare, so many Brisbane homes layer a sheer with a blockout for year-round comfort.
Ceiling-mounted tracks usually look best and give better light control where the window runs close to the ceiling. The curtain falls from ceiling to floor, makes the room feel taller and lets less light over the top. Wall-mounted (face-fixed) tracks suit windows with a large gap above the frame, bulkheads or cornices that get in the way. We’ll recommend the best fixing for each window at the measure.
Yes. Sheer curtains over plantation shutters are a popular layered look. The shutters handle light, privacy and airflow, while the curtains add softness, texture and colour.
