Where motorised curtains make the biggest difference
Most curtains are opened and closed at least twice a day. On a small window you can reach easily, a wand does the job. But on some windows, a motor turns a daily chore into something you don't think about. These are the places Brisbane homeowners most often ask us to motorise.
Voids, high windows and raked ceilings
Double-height living rooms, stairwell windows and raked ceilings look stunning with floor-to-ceiling curtains, but there's no comfortable way to reach the top of them. A motor lets you open and close curtains that start well above head height, with no ladder and no tugging on the fabric.
Wide sliding doors and walls of glass
A long run of stacking doors or a wall of glass means a lot of fabric to pull, and the heavier the fabric, the more effort it takes. A motorised track moves the whole run evenly, so S-fold waves stay neat and the curtain stacks back cleanly every time.
Windows you can't easily reach
Curtains behind a bed head, over a kitchen bench, beside a bath or behind a sofa mean leaning over something every time you want to open them. Motorise them and you can stay where you are.
Bedrooms and nurseries
Close the curtains at night and open them in the morning without getting out of bed. In a nursery, you can close the curtains from the doorway without disturbing a sleeping baby. Pair a motor with blockout curtains for darker sleep.
Media rooms
Close the whole room from your seat before the movie starts. A motorised blockout, often with an S-fold heading across wide glass, is a popular media room setup.
Curved and bay windows
The Novo N21 can run on curved tracks as well as straight ones, so bay and corner windows can be motorised too. Curves carry less weight than straight runs, so we check the track shape and fabric carefully at the measure.
How our motorised curtains work
Every motorised curtain we make has three parts working together: the curtain, sewn to your measurements in Underwood; the track, fixed to your ceiling or wall; and the motor, which sits neatly at one end of the track and drives the curtain along it.
The Novo N21 curtain motor
We fit the Novo N21, a slim curtain motor built for modern curtain tracks. We specify the motor, track, fabric and heading together, so the curtain still folds and stacks the way it should.
A remote, or a light pull
Use the remote handset to open or close your curtains from across the room. Or, if you're already standing at the window, give the curtain a gentle pull and the motor takes over from there.
Rechargeable, with USB-C charging
The motor runs on a built-in rechargeable lithium battery, so there's no separate battery pack at the end of the track. When it needs a top-up, you charge it with a USB-C cable, the same kind many phones use.
Quiet running
The Novo N21 is designed to run quietly, so it suits bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms as well as open-plan living areas.

Motorised sheer, blockout and S-fold curtains
A motor works with the curtain you'd choose anyway. We'll help you pick the fabric for the room first, then plan the motor around it.
- Motorised sheers: soft daylight and daytime privacy across wide glass, opened and closed without tugging on fine fabric. Explore sheer curtains.
- Motorised blockout: darker bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms, closed at bedtime from where you are. Explore blockout curtains.
- Sheer and blockout together: with double curtains, each layer has its own track, so you can motorise the sheer, the blockout or both.
- S-fold (wave) heading: the most common heading for motorised curtains, because the even waves travel smoothly along the track and stack neatly. Read our S-fold curtains guide.
See every fabric and heading on our custom curtains Brisbane page.
Cord-free curtains for homes with kids and pets
Motorised curtains have no cords or chains hanging at the window, so there's nothing for little hands or curious pets to pull on or get tangled in. You open and close the curtain with the remote, so children don't need to tug on the fabric either. The USB-C charging cable is only plugged in while you top up the motor, and can be put away afterwards.
We'll also talk through where the motor and track sit, and where to keep the remote, as part of your measure.
Brisbane sun, heat and your daily routine
Queensland doesn't do daylight saving, so in summer the sun is up very early, and by mid-afternoon the western side of the house is taking the heat. Closing curtains before the hot sun reaches the glass is one of the simplest things you can do for a more comfortable room, and a motor makes it easy to do every day, even on a high window or a long run of glass.
A curtain helps, but it isn't a replacement for insulation, tinting or air-conditioning. For the biggest difference on hot western glass, pair a motor with a blockout curtain.
If you'd like your curtains to open and close by themselves at set times, mention it when you book your measure and we'll confirm the control options for your track.
Which windows should you motorise?
| Window or room | Should you motorise? | What we usually recommend |
|---|---|---|
| Void, high window or raked ceiling | Yes, a favourite | Motorised S-fold sheer or blockout on a ceiling-fixed track |
| Long run of sliding or stacking doors | Usually | Motorised S-fold so a long, heavy run opens evenly |
| Window behind a bed, bench, bath or sofa | Usually | A motor, so you don't have to lean over furniture to reach it |
| Main bedroom | Often | Motorised blockout, with a sheer in front if you want daytime privacy |
| Nursery and kids' rooms | Often | Motorised blockout, closed quietly from the doorway |
| Media room | Often | Motorised blockout across the full width of glass |
| Double curtains (sheer + blockout) | One layer or both | Motorise the layer you use most; keep the other on a wand if you like |
| Small window you can reach easily and rarely close | Not usually | A manual wand is simpler and keeps the cost down |
Not sure which rooms are worth it?
You don't have to motorise every curtain in the house. Many clients motorise only the curtains that are hard to reach or used every day, and keep a wand on the rest. We'll go room by room at your free measure and tell you honestly where a motor makes sense.
What affects the price of motorised curtains?
A motorised curtain quote is the curtain, the track and one motor per track. How many tracks you motorise makes the biggest difference. Your free measure gives you the exact figure. The main factors are:
- Number of motors: one per track, so a double curtain with both layers motorised has two
- Width and drop: wide spans and floor-to-ceiling drops use more fabric and longer tracks
- Fabric: sheer, blockout or both, and the range you choose
- Heading and fullness: S-fold, pinch pleat and box pleat use different amounts of fabric
- Track shape and fixing: straight, curved or bay; ceiling-fixed or wall-fixed
- Number of windows: one void or the whole home
- Installation: ceiling height, access and any special fixing
Example motorised curtain projects
- Void or tall glass: one opening about 4 m+ wide with a high ceiling, motorised S-fold sheer on a ceiling-fixed track.
- Media room or bedroom slider: one opening about 3 m wide, motorised blockout S-fold.
- Day and night bedroom: one sliding door about 2.4 m wide, sheer plus blockout on two tracks, both motorised.
- Bay window: curved track, motorised S-fold sheer.

How we plan, make and fit motorised curtains
1. Motor planning at your free measure
We work out which curtains are worth motorising, where the motor will sit on each track and how you’ll reach it to charge. We check the track length, any curves and the fabric weight against the Novo N21 capacity guide, then quote. If you’d rather motorise later, tell us so we can plan the track for it.
2. Curtains made to run smoothly on a motor
Your curtains are sewn in Underwood with the heading and fullness matched to the motorised track, so the folds travel evenly and stack neatly. Typical lead time is 2–3 weeks from order, and we confirm your date when you order.
3. Installed, set up and explained
Our team fits the track and motor, hangs your curtains and dresses them so the folds fall evenly. We set the open and closed positions, pair the remote, and show you how to use the hand-pull start and how to charge the motor.
4. Backed by a 3-year warranty
The curtains carry the EziLux 3-year warranty, and our Underwood team is nearby for any adjustments.

Motorised curtain FAQs
Are motorised, automatic and electric curtains the same thing?
Yes. "Motorised" is the usual word in Australia, but you'll also hear automatic, electric or smart curtains. They all describe curtains that open and close with a small motor on the track instead of by hand. At EziLux, we make the curtains in our Underwood workroom and fit them with the Novo N21 curtain motor, which you operate with a remote or a light pull on the curtain.
Are motorised curtains worth it?
They're worth it where a curtain is hard to reach, heavy to pull or used every day. That includes voids, high windows, long runs of sliding doors, windows behind furniture or benches, and bedroom curtains you open every morning. On a small, easy-to-reach window that you rarely close, a manual wand is usually all you need. At your free measure, we'll tell you honestly which windows would benefit and which wouldn't.
Can I still open motorised curtains by hand?
Yes. The Novo N21 has a hand-pull start, so a light tug on the curtain sets the motor running and it finishes the job for you. That means you're not stuck hunting for the remote when you just want to look outside. Most people use the remote for daily opening and closing, and the hand pull when they're already standing at the window.
How is the curtain motor powered, and do I need an electrician?
The Novo N21 runs on a built-in rechargeable lithium battery, so there's no separate battery pack at the end of the track. You recharge it with a USB-C cable, the same type many phones use. Because the battery sits inside the motor, the curtain doesn't need to be wired into your home's power. At your measure, we'll plan where the motor sits on the track and how you'll reach it to charge.
How often does a curtain motor need charging?
It depends on how heavy the curtain is, how long the track is and how many times a day it runs. The Novo N21 is designed to give months of typical use between charges in most homes. When it does need a top-up, you plug a USB-C cable into the motor at the end of the track. We'll show you how to charge it when we install your curtains.
Are motorised curtains noisy?
The Novo N21 is designed to run quietly, which is why it suits bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms as well as living areas. How a motorised curtain sounds also depends on the track, the fabric and how the track is fixed, so we plan all three together. If quiet running matters most in a particular room, such as a nursery, mention it when you book so we can plan around it.
How heavy or wide can a motorised curtain be?
It depends on the length of the track, whether it curves, and the weight and fullness of the fabric. A long run of heavy blockout asks more of a motor than a short sheer. The Novo N21 works on single and double tracks, and our curtain motors page has an indicative weight guide by track length. We check every run at the measure and confirm on site that the motor suits your fabric and layout.
Can motorised curtains go on curved or bay windows?
Often, yes. The Novo N21 can run on curved tracks as well as straight ones, so bay and corner windows can be motorised. A curve adds friction, though, so a curved track carries less fabric weight than a straight track of the same length. We measure the shape of the window carefully and check that the motor, track and fabric suit the curve before you order.
Can I motorise both the sheer and the blockout on a double track?
Yes. With double curtains, each layer runs on its own track, so you can motorise the sheer, the blockout or both. Many people motorise the layer they use most, often the blockout in a bedroom or the sheer across wide living-room glass, and keep the other on a wand. If both layers are motorised, each has its own motor, and we set up the controls so you can run each layer on its own.
Can motorised curtains run on a timer or work with Google Home or Alexa?
The Novo N21 curtain motor we fit is controlled with its remote handset or a light hand pull. If you'd like your curtains to open and close at set times, from your phone or with a voice assistant, tell us when you book your measure. We'll confirm what's possible for your track and home before you order, so there are no surprises after installation.
